The BMW Concept Touring Coupe heralds the return of the “clown shoe” shooting brake | carscopes

BMW says the Z4-based Concept Touring Coupe was inspired by a 1940s race car, but is it surely a spiritual successor to the Z3 M Coupe?

When it was launched in 2001, the BMW Z3 M Coupe was the ugly duckling. But like other BMW designs of the 2000s, time has been kind to their looks, and the story behind this passion project has made the “Clown Shoe” a great modern classic. But maybe those at BMW aren’t quite ready to forget the rocky reception the “bread cart” Z3 received – because not once is it cited as the inspiration for this, the BMW Concept Touring Coupe.

This seems odd because as soon as you slam your eyes on the three-door Shooting Brake, you’re immediately reminded of the Z3 M Coupe. But instead, BMW says the shape was inspired by the 328 Touring Coupe that won the Mille Miglia endurance race in 1940. Well, then…

The Concept Touring Coupe that BMW says was built as a “one-off production” model takes the Z4’s long snout and pairs it with some new metal work in the rear, with multiple stripes and a clean overall roof that matches the rest of the aesthetic. The back punches are appropriately muscular, and above them sit Tradition and Order firmly in the Hoffmeister kink.

The Concept Touring Coupe is finished in the unique “Sparkling Lario” color, which features flakes of blue glass embedded in the brown paint. Bronze silver accents and a new vertical-bar grille complete the color scheme, while 20-inch staggered-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, measuring 19 inches front and 20 inches rear.

Not only did the exterior receive the bespoke treatment, the cabin had a very Italian touch. Leather workshop Poltrona Frau has developed an exclusive two-tone option that divides the interior horizontally into two different color sections. The upper part has darker hues, while the lower part has a light brown saddle. There’s even a bespoke luggage set that matches the interior that might step on Ferrari’s toes. The luggage is made in Modena by Schedoni, a name more commonly associated with luggage fitted to Italian supercars.

BMW was light on details of what the underhood features but did mention that the concept is powered by a six-cylinder engine—presumably the same 3.0-liter B58 found in multiple applications.

The BMW Concept Touring Coupe will make its world debut at the opening Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023 which took place on the shores of picturesque Lake Como in Cernobbio, Italy from 19-21 May.

لم يقتصر الأمر على المظهر الخارجي الذي تلقى العلاج حسب الطلب ، بل تمتعت المقصورة بلمسة إيطالية للغاية.  وضعت ورشة الجلود Poltrona Frau خيارًا حصريًا ثنائي اللون يقسم المقصورة الداخلية أفقيًا إلى قسمين مختلفين من الألوان.  يتميز الجزء العلوي بدرجات ألوان أغمق ، بينما يحتوي الجزء السفلي على سرج بني فاتح.  حتى أن هناك مجموعة أمتعة مصممة خصيصًا ومطابقة للداخل والتي قد تطأ أصابع قدم فيراري.  صنعت الأمتعة في مودينا بواسطة شيدوني ، وهو اسم يرتبط بشكل أكثر شيوعًا بالأمتعة المجهزة للسيارات السوبر الإيطالية.
