VGChartz Methodology: Appliance estimates are based on retail samples and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the broader region. This usually allows us to produce numbers that end up within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared with official shipment figures released by console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with more market coverage than us. Then we update our own estimates to bring it in line with those numbers. This can lead to frequent changes often within a short period of time, but we feel it’s important to prioritize accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sale data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases, figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment (sale) data, as once a device leaves the factory and enters the supply chain for delivery, it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between company (inside selling) numbers and VGChartz (inside selling) estimates, even after adjustments. The only exception to this is when the console is discontinued and remaining inventory is finally sold out – at which point the numbers will match.
