These OnePlus V Fold rumors shamed the Pixel Fold | digital trends

OnePlus teased plans to launch a foldable phone a few weeks ago, and it looks like the brand won’t be pulling any punches on its first outing.

According to 91Mobiles, the company’s first foldable phone — referred to as the OnePlus V Fold — will carry aggressive camera hardware borrowed from sister company Oppo Find X6. Add in some other impressive specs, and OnePlus’ first foldable phone is shaping up to be a beast.

For reference, the Oppo Find X6 offers a 50MP still main camera, and it sits alongside another 50MP camera for wide-angle shooting. While that’s pretty impressive in itself, OnePlus is trying to jump up to the Google Pixel Fold with a periscope-style telephoto camera that packs a whopping 50MP camera on the back.

However, the 91Mobiles report states that the OnePlus foldable will offer a 32MP telephoto camera instead of the Find X6’s 50MP sensor. Megapixel numbers aside, it’s the mechanism here that counts. Every foldable phone out there features a standard telephoto zoom camera that offers a limited optical zoom range.

But phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro have a periscope-style telephoto camera that bends incident light at a right angle and passes it through a tunnel before it hits the sensor. This mechanism allows the lens elements more room for position adjustment, providing a higher lossless zoom range as a result.

Take, for example, the Oppo Find X6, which offers a digital zoom range of up to 120x — even higher than the 100x zoom offered by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera giant. Assuming the leak actually turns out to be true, the OnePlus V Fold will be the most powerful foldable phone on the market in terms of camera capabilities.

The only other phone that can stand toe-to-toe with the OnePlus foldable is said to be the Oppo Find N3, another foldable phone that serves as the template for the OnePlus V Fold. It is plausible that the successor to the Oppo Find N2 will be sold in the Asian market while the OnePlus V Fold will get a wider release in the West, including the US.

Other leaked specs are also impressive

The latest leak also predicts a 20MP selfie camera above the cover display and a 32MP camera housed inside a punch-hole on the inner foldable screen. Speaking of the display, the OnePlus V Fold may serve an 8-inch foldable panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz.

Assuming Oppo doesn’t deviate too dramatically from the Find N2’s design, its successor — the OnePlus V Fold, by that stretch — will go for a square aesthetic similar to the Google Pixel Fold rather than the vertical symmetry favored by Samsung and Vivo’s foldable phones.

Finally, rumors point to a fairly capable 4,805mAh battery for the OnePlus V Fold. It is said to be released in the second half of 2023, and OnePlus seems to be doing its best for its inaugural entry in the foldable segment, which already looks attractive. But it will be interesting to see how much OnePlus costs the phone

If one goes into the brand’s history of selling top-tier devices at competitive prices, the OnePlus V Fold is destined to knock $1,800 off foldable gladiators from Google and Samsung. However, the brand’s recent approach with the likes of the OnePlus 10 Pro and OnePlus 11 is a sign that it wants to take on Samsung and Apple in their own high price arena without cutting any corners.
